Nami ryu Aiki Heiho

Nami ryu Aiki Heiho

Our martial arts school is an official Nami ryu Aiki Heiho dojo. Chief Instructor Jim O’Connell, sensei is a certified Nami ryu instructor who trained with and taught at the Hombu dojo of James Williams sensei for over 25 years.

Our system is comprised of classical weapons and unarmed techniques (Jujutsu and Aiki-jujutsu) taken directly from the study of kenjutsu and iaijutsu sword arts.

Our Principles

Nami ryu means “wave style” and refers to the fact that energy travels in waves. This wave effect is one of the underlying physical principles of our art.

These and many other principles of strategy are learned through the study of the Japanese sword. The principles learned through the sword are then applied to practical skills that are applicable in modern times.

Join a Class

Everyone is welcome to train in Nami Ryu.

Many of our students begin with little to no previous training in martial arts, while some have had extensive training in the military or another art. Class sizes vary, but you will receive active help and feedback to learn and improve. Please contact us if you are visiting the Northern Arizona – Grand Canyon area and would like to join us for training.

Online Zoom classes for folks outside of easy Flagstaff travel are available through our Fresno-based affiliate, Nishi no Kaze Dojo.

Learning Japanese swordsmanship online is easier than it has ever been. These new video classes only require a belt (Kaku obi) and training weapons.

Please contact us if you would like to observe a Zoom class or try one out (don’t worry, you can keep your video off if you prefer).

Whatever your experience level or prior martial arts experience, we invite you to submit the contact form on this page to schedule a time to observe or participate in a video class or in-person class.
